Sew for "Dress A Girl"

Free

with NACE Staff

Calendar Next available session starts Sep 15, 2026 at 10 am

Every girl deserves at least one dress. Since October 2009, "Dress A Girl Around The World" has reached over 81 countries with a recorded number of over one million dresses delivered to girls in need around the world. Recently, we spoke with the Maine DAG Ambassador, Jane, who is in need of help with sewing menstral pads and dresses for girls in need.

We will be holding 9 sewing dates for those who are interested in volunteering their time to sew. You can stay the whole time or for a few hours; any help is appreciated. If there are more requests for sewing days, we will update that information on our website and social media. Feel free to bring a lunch with you; the sewing room at NACE has a refrigerator you can keep your food/drinks in.

Cake Mix Recipe Quilt

$58

with Nancy Neubert

Calendar Next available session starts Sep 23, 2026 at 6 pm

Using a Cake Mix Pad (provided at the first class) and a layer cake (42 10" squares of coordinating fabrics)  we will create 4 different quilt blocks to assemble a quilt.  This method uses an easy paper piecing technique that has directions already printed on the paper.  Blocks can be set on point or the standard setting for a creative unique quilt top.  Fabric requirements will be sent out via email before the first class.  This class is for advanced beginner quilters.

Upcycle It - Feed Sack Flip

$16

with Nancy LeClair

Calendar Next available session starts Sep 28, 2026 at 5 pm

From feed sack to fabulous!

Turn something ordinary into something beautifully useful in this hands-on upcycling workshop. In this class, you’ll transform used animal feed bags into durable, reusable tote bags full of personality and rustic charm.

Each feed sack tells its own story—from farm store staple to one-of-a-kind fashion piece. You’ll give it a brand-new life instead of sending it to the landfill. Along the way, you’ll learn simple sewing and construction techniques to create a sturdy, functional tote you’ll actually want to show off.

Some prior sewing experience is recommended, and a willingness to create, experiment, and have fun. Perfect for anyone interested in sustainability, crafting, or making something unique with their own two hands. Leave with a finished tote and a fresh perspective on how everyday materials can be reimagined.

Please bring  to class:
• Sewing Machine
• Scissors
• Thread (regular thread is fine)
• A jeans or heavy-duty needle
• Marker
• Clips

Optional to bring:
• Nancy will have feed sacks available for the class, however you are welcome to bring your own if you would like. (These sacks are made of a plastic recyclable material, not paper. Make sure to clean out the feed sack prior to class by either wiping it out or rinse out in a tub. Then let it dry. Also trim the top and the bottom edges of the bag.)

Bring your sewing machine and supplies, or do hand work.

NACE has irons, ironing boards, cutting mats, and rulers available to use during class time. If you need to borrow a sewing machine, please let us know ahead of the class.

Pre-K & Kindergarten Book Bag Project

Free

with Nancy LeClair

Calendar Next available session starts Jan 26, 2027 at 10 am

The NACE Kindergarten Book Bag Project has been supporting incoming kindergarteners within our community for over 20 years. Our goal is to encourage education within the community, and get future kindergarteners excited about learning! Each bag contains resources for parents and fun activities for kids. This year, for the first time, we will also be making a pencil roll case for our new incoming pre-K students!

Each year, a group of volunteers work together to put these bags together, and with the generous support of local businesses and groups we are able to get supplies to put in the bags. Last year, our team put together almost 200 book bags, with extra to spare!

Volunteers help with: sewing bags, handles, and pencil roll cases, cutting, ironing, turning bags inside out
