Cyanotype Printing

with Troy Bennett

$75

Cyanotypes, or blueprints were one of the first photographic printmaking processes invented. They’re fun and easy to make! Discover the magic of cyanotype—a historic, camera-less photographic printing process using the sun's UV rays to produce one-of-a-kind Prussian blue and white prints. This 19th-century technique blends art, science, and nature.

A hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop where students will learn how to mix the light-sensitive chemicals, coat their own paper, and arrange beautiful organic compositions. After the paper has been prepared, we’ll step outside and expose our prints in the sun; then learn how to develop them in plain water, instantly revealing the creations. No prior photography or art experience is necessary. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to play.

In this class you will learn:

1. The Basics: A brief history of the cyanotype process.

2. Chemical Mixing: How to safely handle and mix the light-sensitive solutions.
3. Paper Coating: Techniques for evenly coating your watercolor paper.

4. Foraging & Composition: Arranging botanicals (leaves, pressed flowers, twigs) and everyday objects to create striking negative spaces.

5. Exposure & Development: Using natural sunlight to expose your prints and water to stop the chemical reaction.

Materials fee is included in the cost of the class.
